| DVD Burner won't recognise blank DVDs
I have a problem where I can use my DVD burner to burn CD's, but it won't recognise or copy to DVD. I've used the same burner, and the same disks in the past, but been unable to use the burner since a recent mobo replacement.
It's an Optorite 8x burner, and an Asus A7N8X-E motherboard, running on WinXPHome...
Any suggestions?? |

Thanks for the suggestion, but it seems the help files relate to CDROM and DVDROM drives, and not to burning a DVD.
The burner seem to work fine with CDRs, but will not recognise blank DVDs
The situation is that I've downloaded a pile of game demos (legally of course ) and want to free up some space on my hard drives. I could use a stack of CDRs but one or two of the downloads are more than 650mb |

What do you mean by "doesn't recognize" the blank DVD? What program are you using? If you're in Nero, have you checked out "Disc Information" in one of the Tools Menu's at the top of the window to see what it reads the disc as? What kind of error messages are you getting? More information helps us help you better. |

What DVD burning software are you using? Have you tried re-installing the software, thus forcing a fresh install of the software's required ASPI layer?

When I put a pre recorded, or data DVD (or CD) into the drive, I can watch or install from the disk with no problems... but if I put a blank DVD ready to burn data or a DVD film, the software doesn't register that theres a disk in the drive at all.
I've tried using Clone DVD, Roxio, DVD Fab, and DVD Santa, all with the same results.
My next steps will be to try uninstalling and then reinstalling the software as Rob suggests, then maybe updating the firmware? |

Tried you suggestion last night (and updated the firmware), and although CloneDVD now accepts that there's a blank DVD in the drive, it still won't burn the disk... the program runs as if its about to burn the disk, but stays on 0%
I've now taken the drive out of my system, and getting my brother-in-law to install it in his rig, and do some test runs for me... So for now, I've got a pile of backup DVDs on my system with no way to burn 'em |

Did you buy it off Newegg? Newegg has a 49.99 opterite drive on newegg that wont burn to any of the 5 free disks they give you. IF you did buy that drive on newegg are you trying to burn with those 5 free disks?

Bought it from the UK branch of Ebuyer (with NO free disks). I've successfully burned a number of 8x and 4x DVDs, from Ebuyer and from a local supplier, but having problems since a recent upgrade/rebuild.
I've updated the firmware, and also uninstalled and reinstalled software and drivers with no success. Trying it in a different system is probably my last resort unless I take the plunge and get a new drive. |
