MAN, that is a FAST drive !
Your temps seem too high, if the thing is too hot to touch you better get some cooling on it and fast.
I've had some odd speed readings.

On a WD 20g 7200 ATA/100 in a 1998 Dell Pentium II 350
the WD 20g 7200 showed 9k/sec and less
the WD 4.3 5400 drive showed 12k ~ ?????
this is much faster than the 7200 ?
A check of Device Mgr showed DMA enabled, the WD utility to enable ATA 33/66/100 FAILED !
I installed a Iwill Side-66 RAID card and ran it as a single drive and got readings from 4.0k-31,000
The blue bar was 2" wide ??
What gives ?

My drives are quite warm to the touch, but I think it's ok. I need to take that utilty home and test it there also.
Sounds like you are not getting your drives setup right, perhaps your machine has a problem, incorrect or incorrectly installed drivers?
You are using the 80 conductor cable. Did you use the cable select settings on the drive? Some drives will not operate at ATA66+ unless the jumper is on cable select.
