I have a Compaq HD and want it to be a slave but have no idea where to put the little clip in the back. I move it a half a dozen time but every time my computer still boots up and runs off Compaq HD. If I take it out all together the computer boots up fine on the "master". What should I do? I would like the Compaq drive to be a slave.
Thanks |

Compaq's sometimes use the cable select method. This means the drive on the end of the cable is the first drive, and the drive connected to the middle of the cable will be the second.
Both drives should have the jumpers set for cable select-CS |

Also, on some drives, you set the drive to the "slave' position by removing the jumper entirely. So, you may be doing the right thing by removing the jumper.
Also, Compaq is famous for putting their own special firmware (programmed chips on the bottom of the drive) onto things like drives and motherboards, so it could be that the drive is pitching a fit because of this.

that's part of my problem, I don't know where to put the jumper. I've had it in almost every position(also removed it). I have my master hd at the end of one cable and cdrw on the same cable connected to IDE1. And I put the Compaq hd on IDE2. That's how I have it set up but the Compaq wants to show off. The Compaq hd is ~3 years old (8gig).
Also, I have the boot up settings to boot from
1st-floppy
2nd-IDE1
3rd-disabled
One more question, is this area the cmos or bios?
And what does coms stand for?
Thanks,
Naz |

Naz, are you saying that even when you put this drive on the secondary IDE controller, the machine is still booting off it? I assume you have your other drive on IDE1, by the looks of it.
Have you formatted the Compaq drive? It may have some EZ-Bios stuff on it that overrides the BIOS commands. Or, you may have the "proprietary firmware" problem I referred to earlier.
CMOS=Central Machine Operating System
same thing as
BIOS=Basic Internal Operating System.

I think Tomteriffic hit the nail on the head. You have the compaq diagnostic partition on the compaq drive. You will need to enter diagnostics by hitting F10 during bootup and find the option to create a diagnostics disk.
The process is a little complicated, and I can't walk you through it but basically you need to make the diagnostic disks, then disconnect your compaq drive and boot with the disk you just made, create a diagnostic partition on your new drive, and follow the prompts to copy the diagnostics on to the new drive.
You will also have to create the primary partition and format the new drive.
After the system boots on the new drive you can connect the second drive, run fdisk and delete the compac diagnostic partition on the old drive.
I HATE COMPAQS! They put the bios on the hard drive. It should be on the mother board.... RANT (ignore)
An other thought. Does your computer refer to your controllers as IDE 1 and IDE 2, or is it IDE 0 and IDE 1?
Also I would recommend placing both hard drives on the first controller and the cd on the second. This will prevent the slower cd drive from slowing the hard drives down. |

Well, I think I'll just leave the Compaq out of the picture. And, I will put the cd back on the ide2. Thanks for everyones help even though it was way to complicated for me. I't not worth the trouble.
Thanks,
Naz |
