| Moving Dynamic Disk
Hey guys, I recently got a laptop as a desktop replacement, however I have an external HD about 120GB's worth and I tried attaching the drive with an external enclosure system and the only option I have in WINXP Pro is to "Convert to Basic Disk".
I do not want to format my drive, but it seems unless I do I won't be able to use it with WINXP. Any ideas? I really need to keep all of the info on here and if there is a way to attach the disk of convert it to basic without losing my info that'd be great, since it is set as a Dynamic Disk
I did some searching on goggle and such, and I do not have the option to "Import Foreign Disk". Any thoughts?
Thanks. |

Is the volume marked as dynamic in the storage management console? How were you using it before and how was it formatted? |

Converting to basic should not cause loss of data.
You should the option to import the foregin volume.

well unfortunately it was marked as Dynamic in another system I built with WINXP Pro, i'm moving this to a new laptop utilizing the same OS, but my only option is to convert to basic disk. However i've heard that if i do this i'll lose all my data which i cannot do.
Sound right, or am I wrong? |

Anyways.. I am not worthy and didn't read the first post property.
Basically Windows does not support dynamic disks via external drivers (usb, firewire, etc)... as to KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/254105/EN-US/
I would take the drive and put it in a desktop.. import it and then transfer the data. Covert the drive to basic and then transfer the data and then you should be good to go. |

Well there lies another issue. The only other machine in the house is a Windows ME machine, real piece of junk. Would I be able to do the import option? |
