philips dvd8421 and dvd+r DL problem

I have an HP pavillion a735w that has a philips dvd8421 dvd+r/+rw dual layer drive in it. I bought some verbatim dvd+r dl blank discs, and when I tried to record on one, it told me "in-compatible media".
I tried updating the firmware on it, but it still will not recognize these discs. Are there certain discs that it will recognize, and others it will not?
There are not too many types of dvd+r dl discs available here.
I have even debated buying a plextor drive, or one that is perhaps more compatible. Any ideas?

Sometimes certain DVD's just will not work. All media (even unbranded) has a little number written round the middle hole, take that number and put it into google, that will let you identify it, then check with your hardware vendor if it is complient or not.

If you can buy DVD media from a local hardware store individualy, buy several types, and find one thats good for your drive, i find Ritek are the best for me.
