DVD Writer / CD Writer as storage

I want to use my DVD Writer / CD Writer as storage, the same way as I do my floppy drive. I am using Win XP and Record now came installed with the system. Is there a 3rd party utility that I can get to get the writer to act as a LG floppy ?
My system is a HP Pavilin, pentium 4 , w/ 512 MB DDR.

if you mean a disc that can stay in the drive and windows can write to it
then use a CD-RW and leave it in the drive

HI joda101, Welcome to TechIMO.

Just put a "rw" disk(DVD OR CD-depending on your drive) into the drive and copy to it. You must use 'RW' media othewise once the data is written, you must replace the disk with a new disk- its write once media. You need rewrite media to make it work.

Now for ^backups^ I stongly urge you to buy the write once media and keep multiple sets of your configuration, settings, and critical programs/data.

Thanks for the replies, I have tried using a DVD+RW, and also a CD+RW to accomplish what I am after, however the problem is that the files, once written to the disc becomes (read only), therefor I am unable to go back and edit the data and then re-save it back to the same place. The only way so far that i have been able to accomplish this task is by erasing the disc and then re-saving the file back to it. the only problem with that is that I can't just erase a single file on the disc, I have to erase the whole disc-therein lies the problem of losing all of the other files on the disc.

With my old pavilion, I was able to just put a CDRW in the drive and use it in the same manner as you would the A: drive(floppy)

That is why I figured that there must be a third party utility or"software" that can be used.
