I have looked on ebay and on the net for the exact model so I can just replace the pc board...no luck... It is a 20 gig and i have found similar models on ebay... how can i find out if another maxtor 20 gig pc board will work?

If you cannot find a board or a new board doesnt work You may want to send the hard drive to a data recovery center. I can cost a few hundred dollars though.

Well since it's dead anyway (potentially) and if you have any soldering skills and if the circuit trace is in fact open, you could try soldering a jumper wire around the burned spot. Of course you have know idea what caused the burn to begin with but if it's serious enough another location will fail.
