ibm hard drives

another chapter to the ongoing issues with ibm drives

Quote:
We want our customers to know that IBM drives are reliable and we are working to make our drives more reliable. One way to show this is to inform the customers of what usage is appropriate for the drive. Limiting the power on hours should significantly reduce failures.

limiting the time it is on

IBM's t6echnology is too complicated... they ahve a little cpu that needs proper cooling!!! Maybe if you get a HSF combo for it you can keep it on longer than 8 hours ROFL!

They really SOLVE the problem instead of making an 8 hour disclaimer. I'm really dissapointed in big blue. . .

[H]ardOCP, [H]ardNews for Monday, March 11, 2002 - Sixth Ed.

Quote:
We posted a link yesterday from The InqWell about new IBM drives and their running times. It seems as though IBM is very well aware of it with some of their drives. Dean Manning pointed out page 50, paragraph 9.4.4 of their own 60GXP spec sheet.

Quote:
9.4.4 Life

Expected product live is 5 years under typical destop PC usage conditions:

- 333 Power-On Hours per month
- Seeking/writing/reading operation to be 20% of POH at 40c or lower environmental temperatures

333 hours / 30 days = 11.1 hours per day. 11.1 * 20% = 2.22 hours of actual operation time.

If anybody knows of what the other big manufacturers think their drives are worthy of, we would surely like to see documentation.

Richard Ahlquist, as posted on [H]ardOCP on [H]ardNews for Monday, March 11, 2002 - Thirteenth Ed.

Quote:
Well lets see if we take your math further than that;

333hours/mo * 12months *5 years (off the graphic you posted) = 19,980 hours total. That’s Horrible!

Lets see Western Digital rates their 120GB at 500,000 hours on the bottom of this page. Lets compare a High end, high quality drive the Cheetah X15 it has a MTBF of 1,200,000 hours! Ok lets play fair and compare it to something a little older like it is how about a Seagate ST4766E 667meg HD circa 3/29/90 (according to the bad sector sticker on the drive). According to Seagate's web site this drive has a MTBF of 150,000 hours. Lets try something older. How about an old ST 225, nope that’s got a MTBF of 100,000 hours.

It's nice to know my WD 120GB will last 25x as long as an IBM drive.

I have 6 IBM 75GXP drives that need replacement sitting on my desk right now! They don't advance replace, and I don't have enough packing material to ship all of them individually.

Question
IBM Deskstar

I just bought this from newegg.. (a great company, I might add)IBM 40GB 7200RPM Model # IC35L040AVER07, Part # 07N6654 - 60GXP OEM ofr $80...
Is this one of the models that is faulty...
should I return it while I can?
What should I get for my customers instead... The Maxtor quite drive L series or WD.. I am realyy confused as I have always used IBMs in my machines...
Thanks for the heads up.

I've never been happier than with my WD 400BB (40gig, 7200 RPM). It's pretty quiet, pretty cool, and it performs well. The read rate never falls under 20mb/s.
