| Western Digital acting funny.
This doesn't sound good to me, but on my P3 550 when I shut down the main hrad drive powers down, spins up, powers down again, and spins up again then the computer shuts down. This makes me think the hard drive my be ready to kick the bucket.
What do you think? Will I be doing an RMA soon? |

would you happen to have another machine to put the drive in to see if it acts the same way? that sounds pretty strange. the fact that its not making knocking or pinging noises is what makes me wonder if its even bad or on its way out.

Exactly, every hard drive I have had that has gone bad the heads go funny and make knocking sounds. Thats what makes me wonder as well. I'll take it out and boot it in another system and shut it down and tell you what happens. |

Go to the Western Digital site and download the Diagnostic Utility (dlgdiag.zip) to test the drive. LINK

in general it sounds software related to me. like the others said try it on another system but if its software and thats your primary drive then it may do the same. i would say back it up and try a format and reinstall if you can.

take it as you will.

Yeah, I could use a clean install. I'll try swapping systems, then the util, the clean install. Hope it works. |

Still doing it. Tried it in four other PCs and it does it. I have cleared the MBR, LL format twice, and reinstall just the OS and it is still doing it. |

Can you spell RMA NOW?
Sounds like you have ruled out everything else.
Good luck! |

Could be the HD board going. I have had a few drives where the drive goes crazy and I replaced the circuit board from another HD (same drive of course) and worked perfect. You will have to RMA it though if it does go cause doing what I did will void the warranty. |

Download that diagnostic utility, run it and report any code the utility gives you on the online RMA form. Makes the RMA go smoother with WD.
