| Help! Need to Partition sata drive that has space already fully allocated in XP!
Hi,
I have recently installed a Seagate 160gb Sata Hard Drive on my system. Works fine. I also have a western digital ata 120gb drive which has my OS (windows xp) running on it. I want to split the sata drive into two partitions. There is around 40gb worth of stuff on it.
The Windows xp disk management tool seems to suggest partition only for a drive with unallocated space but i think all the space on the sata drive is allocated.
The new partition option doesn't exist when i right-click a drive in the disk management console.
Also, the diskpart tool in dos does not allow me to create a new partition.
How do i create a partition for a fully allocated drive with around 110gb of free space left on it?
Ultimately, what i wanted to do was to create two partitions for the sata drive - one with all the 40gb worth of stuff and the other one free partition.
Why i wanted a free partition was cos i wanted to transfer my c:\ (which is the western digital ata drive with WIndows XP on it) to my sata drive as i want my sata drive to be my c:\ running my OS. I do not want to reinstall windows XP and all that.
Firstly, Is there a good tool that can do this?
Secondly, is it wise to transfer an operating system drive to another one?
Thirdly, would transfering my OS to a sata drive be helpful to my system in terms of speed and stability?
Please help with any of these issues if you can. Any help would be appreciated greatly.
Thank you,
Shuja. |

You need Partition Magic. You can get it on Ebay for about $20.
It is a great utility, I couldn't survive without it. Any manipulation of partitions with the Windows tools will result in the loss of all data.
Look here: http://www.softwarediner.com/cgi-bin...words=symantec
You can get Partition Magic for $15 and Norton Ghost 2003 for $8
Probably the 2 most important programs a geek can have.
[don't buy Ghost 9 it isn't the same program as earlier versions]

If your ATA is 100 or 133 it probably won't be any faster So far SATA 150 isn't any faster that a fast ATA 133 |
