| Convert Extended Partition to Primary Partition??
Anyone know if this is possible???
The reason is, I'm in the process of recovering my (pretty much) broken partitions. Now I'm at a point where I have one partition, which is an extended partition, with Windows XP on it. I want to be able to boot from this partition so obviously I need to convert it (if possible) to primary.
The weird thing is that this partition never used to be extended. When I originally set up my system, the partition with Windows XP on it was a primary partition. *sigh* |

Hmm, strange that it turned into a secondary partition. Unfortunately, there may not be a way to do it without destroying the partition.
My advice is to copy everything to a different drive or partion, fix the partition, copy everything back, then reset the bootloader (fixmbr, fixboot). That is, if this is possible. |

yeah, it's bogus, and giving me a headache..... copying all the data over may not be such an easy task, (since the broken partition takes up the entire drive), but we'll see. |

Worse comes to worse, just CD-burn everything important on that partition, then wipe it clean and reinstall XP. Will take a long time, yes, but it works when you have little space to spare. |

Welcome to TechIMO, Guy.
You can use Partition Magic 8 to convert to a primary partition. Make sure that you back up your important data first in case things go awry. |

Hehe, thanks for the welcome jarhed... I have to say I'm pretty impressed with this place. I could swear I've searched for well-populated hardware related forums before but didn't find anything... Not sure how I missed this place.
Anyways, I'm off to try to figure out how to recover some data. :-/ |

Near the top of the page of the forums is a search function. I did a search for data recovery and put the link below. Maybe one of the threads will give you the info you need to recover your data.
Good luck. http://www.techimo.com/forum/search.php?searchid=653973
