Any reason for the 40 gig size? Seems like for $5-10 more you can get double that size... |

you only want 40-gig? Those actually might be hard to come by now.
I like Seagate and Western Digital a lot, I use those when I build/upgrade computers for people.
They also have great utilities as well, in case I need to do anything fancy with the install.
Personally, I'm using a Hitachi 80gb SATA drive in my computer and LOVE it. It's quiet, fast and have never had any problems. |

Check out the deals at www.techbargains.com
You will likely find a deal on a new drive at Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA etc. A while back I grabbed a new 120gb Seagate drive for $42 with tax at Best Buy. This was without any rebates either. www.nextag.com is also a good place to search for good prices on anything.

I've used Seagate and Western Digital drives so far, and I've heard good things about Hitachi and Samsung.
Maxtor is OK, but I'd get Seagate, if I could spare a few bucks, or get a Samsung if strapped for cash. Samsung's are inexpensive, but they're still well made, a lot better than what they used to be. |

Well, as a few have said, think again on the size. Once you have a final decision, search a few reviews on the harddrive you are interested in.
I have a maxtor harddrive, its been with me for about 5 years, i havent had any problems with it or anything. If i was going to buy anotehr harddrive though, i think id try hitachi too.
