Advice on External Hard Drives/Enclosures

I am looking into getting one of these, and I'm not really sure what route to take.

Reliable is what I am shooting for, inexpensive would be a plus. =)
I'm also thinking about running it on a network (so I can share files with my wife).

One of my questions was, if I use it on a network, am I able to keep it powered on 24/7?

I don't know if I would leave any of them on 24/7 honestly. Mine has a fan and it still gets really really hot! I have a friend that has killed several drives in enclosures. He leaves them on 24/7 while he downloads. I don't know what kind of enclosure he uses though....
