Ghosting To An External HD
Well I solved my own problem of backing up my entire C drive to an external drive (Best Way To Backup My Laptop HD). It ends up there is a backup utility that is a part of Windows XP. Worked fine (so I think), just took like 6 hours. Well now that I have a new 80GB HD to replace the 30GB currently in the laptop, I can't figure out how to use Ghost to make an image of the current drive onto the new drive (housed in an external case and running thru the USB port). Each time I boot to the Ghost floppy I am told that there is only 1 drive (the internal 30GB). I've also tried copying from C to E (while in Windows) but can't because some of the files were in use by Windows. Any valid suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I am stumped.

You need to have USB drivers installed. Depending on your Ghost version, there should be an option to create a boot disk with appropriate drivers.

If I look in "My Computer"I can see the external drive, and if I open "Disk Management" it shows that it is healthy. What other drivers do I need?
Also, besides Norton, what other GOOD disk imaging software would any of you recommend? I only use Ghost because it's what I am familiar with since we used it where I used to work.Last edited by JMHar; September 11th, 2006 at 11:27 AM.

Perhaps I missed something.... If you're using Ghost from a floppy, then it's irrelevant what Windows does or does not see. It's the operating system on the floppy that needs the USB drivers.

It turns out that Ghost 7 does not have usb copy capabilities. So that is why my external drive is not seen when I boot from a floppy. But I now understand what you are saying as to needing drivers. The OS on the floppy needs them, or I need to get a newer version of Ghost (8 and above I believe).
Has anyone ever used this: CMS USB 2.0 Data Transfer Kit?Last edited by JMHar; September 12th, 2006 at 10:37 AM.

Rememberise this: 50 pounds is about half-grown. These bacon-butts are not really as micro as the people trying to sell them to you pretend they are.
