I'd appreciate some feedback from folks who own large external hard drives and like what they have. I'm interested in the Seagate and Western Digital 500 GB drives I see advertised. I want reliability first. I'd especially prefer a drive with both USB and firewire. Other brands considered.
as always, it depends on what you're looking for ray..its tough to beat Seagates warranty, but like most "whats the best" questions, you're bound to get an argument...its just that hard drives are relatively cheap these days, just bought a 500gb sata recently for less than $90 and most of the discussion these days is with the enclosures if you dont' buy an "all-in-one" type external....great thread here and also a great place place to find a bargain on the aforementioned http://www.fatwallet.com/t/28/496281
I use a WD MyBook Premium 500g and it is fantastic. The reason I went with the MyBook is because I can use it as room decoration (I have it sitting on my book shelf), it is passive cooling (No noise at all), it comes with its own backup software, and it was cheaper than any other brand out there.
However, from what I have seen, the top three external HDs are Western Digital, Seagate, and Lacie.
