I'm thinking about RAIDing my file server at home. I can go PCI or PCI-E.
I've seen prices from $20 to $400. Can someone reccomend a GOOD card in the $50 to $100 range that will get me RAID 1?
I will get 2 brand new drives for this. How do I take my existing drive in the computer and transfer the data to one of the new RAID drive and get RAID 1 up and running?
Thanks in advance... |

go PCI-E (wider bus width).
Data transfer.. well you'll have to back everything up to whatever you have and then reinstall the OS and restore the backups.

If you are getting two new drives disconnect the current drive , put the card in and hookup the new drives then setup the raid array you want, now when this is all done use
Ghost or Acronis and copy the old drive to the raid array. I have done this so many times I cant count and never had a problem
This assumes you are happy with your current setup, no reinstall needed.

Yeah, what sixpac said? LOL
And I'm getting confused...is this software or hardware RAID?
I have an Acronis backup I"m happy with on my current file server; it's done every Friday. |

Good to go on the PCI-E too...but any Brand Names anyone cares to throw out in the price range I mentioned?
I've looked on NewEgg, but I didn't recognize any brand names. |

Not sure yet sixpac...I've seen a WD 160 gig drive for $99.00 U.S.; 2 of those set me back $200 plus tax and the RAID card. Small price to pay for backups.
I do Acronis True Image of 4 computers that *should* fit on the 160 gigger; part of me says to go bigger on the array.
I don't know; what do you suggest withouth breaking the bank on 2 new drives?
Mind you, this "file server" is a 3.4 Ghz Celeron, Compaq SR5010NX Pc I got from Best Buy for $199 (it was the last one on the floor and I swiped it up! LOL). Not 100% sure right now I want this as my file/backup server. I've seen Dell low-end servers running for $350 (no OS, low memory), but they may be "built" better than this Compaq (and even that is debateable).

And now I have another question...
Say I backup all my pc's to this RAID'ed file server. Then, I want to backup the file server (or ONE of it's drives to an external drive). Can I do this? |
