To keep it simple, I can get this (750 gigs) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152100
for the same price as this (640 gigs) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218
I've been a WD fan for some time but always watching to see what's out there. There's been some discussion on NewEgg's ratings about compatibility issues with Samsung and nVidia chipset mobos. So I phoned Samsung and went up the ladder to 3rd level tech support. The tech knew nothing of compatibility issues with anything, aside from mobo's that only support 1.5 gigs/sec. |

I have used Seagate and WD and have never had a bad drive bewtween them. Personally i have never used a samsung for a desk top. Out of the 2 you listed the Samsung would be the better of the 2, more gigs and more cache on the samsung. I believe my laptop has a Samsung hd i have no problems with it. |

I'm going to order one of the Samsung 750 gig drives. If it's fine, I'll get a second for back up. |

Should be the better choice if its not DOA.
But Newegg reviews seem to point to bad quality control.
I also dont see a warranty period. |

Also remember that reviews may reflect a small percentage of owners, and what usually triggers a review is DOA. |

3 year warranty on Samsung Desktop drives. Had to phone Samsung to find that out.
BTW: This was the most stellar tech support line I have ever called. No waits. The front-line person gave me a ticket number and then we went from there. Took maybe 4-5 minutes and I got to speak with a level-3 guy who said "there are no compatibility issues with our SATA drives unless the controller will only recognize 1.5 GB/sec."
I watch NE's consumer ratings and give them quite a bit of weight. But I think you have to sort out the newbies who like in this case may have SATA turned off in Bios, etc. You can tell who is knowledgeable. But also I will be the first to give a crummy rating of the product deserves it! |

Update: I went to nVidia's site. They were talking about issues with some hdd's. Combining what they said, and the not so great reviews on NewEgg's site, I killed the Samsung idea and ordered the WD's. |
