No need to mess with the jumpers unless it's set to force 150MB/s. Quote: |
The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 150MB/s drives is for factory use only. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 300MB/s drives can be used to force the drive into SATA 150MB/s mode for use with older SATA controllers that only work with SATA 150MB/s drives.

i believe that it is set to limit to 1.5 but the jumper is about impossible to remove. I have tried tweezers along with severa other sharp tools. no luck. |

also if i have two and the jumpers are in the same location. (just as pictured above) don't i need to move one to determine the master and slave? |

There isn't a master/slave relationship with SATA drives. If your motherboard only supports SATA I (1.5) then leave the jumpers on. If your motherboard supports SATA II (3.0) then use a small or precision screwdriver to gently pry them off.
Edit: Sorry Roosta I'm been up all night putting a system together to get out today and I guess I'm too tired to comprehend your post on the first read. I've heard of problems being caused by not having the jumpers on a SATA II hd on a SATA I motherboard but I don't know if leaving the jumpers on a SATA II hd on a SATA II motherboard will cause problems since it is backwards compatible. I used a small precision screwdriver to pry off the one I installed last night.

Thanks for the jumper info, Atomic Rooster!
Even running in IDE mode, removing the SATA 1 jumper gave my 500GB Seagate a 7-8% boost according to Passmark's Performance Test 6.1. I'll re-check it when I get SATA mode running.
ps. I used a push pin to remove the jumper. Just stabbed it from the top and moved it enough to get the point behind it, then pushed it off the pins.
