format scratch drive?

Long time no post here but am a daily lurker all the same.

I am ready to install a new 500GIG sata drive to use as a scratch disc only for movies, music, graphics & such. I'm not sure whether I should install XP on the drive or if there is something else I should do. I know how to hook it up in the proper SATA sequence so that's not a problem.
Hope you will have the patience to answer a pretty basic question.
THX guys.

If you are only using it for storage then there is no need to install anything to the drive. Just connect it to the mobo, boot to your previous installation of windows and go to disk management to format the new drive.
