Hitachi DVD drive for Dell XPS1710

Began getting error message every time during boot process: "The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified." Removed old drive and replaced with new DVD drive. Same error message. Downloaded new drivers, flashed BIOS, performed every troublehooting wizard with same results. Dell XPS 1710 with OS: XP

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That's a Notebook isn't it? The system modular bay can also be referring to the battery...Did you make any type of change prior to getting the error message?

It sounds to me like your CD/DVD drive. The usual cure is simply to remove and reseat the drive. But you might check the BIOS to be sure the drive is recognized.
