    new HD not assigned

Destined to be a newb forever it seems

Using XP Pro I just installed a new 500GIG WD SATA drive. When I booted after installing it the new hardware balloon recognized it, it shows up in BIOS as 4th master, all 3 of my drives are SATA. I want to use this one as a scratch disc. Device manager says it's working properly but it doesn't show up in My Computer & obviously it's not assigned a letter so what gives guys? Never encountered this before.
Thanks for any "now here's how"

Another way would have been to go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. There you can format and initialize your new drives.
