Under Burn....Write, Disk-at-once, and Cache files smaller than 128kb....pretty much teh default, except i skip the sim and testing. That works fine for me....but I generally dont do much while I am burning just to be careful. Are you getting a buffer underrun?

edit: I don't think it would be the CDR's....I have used some pretty POS CDR's and have never had a problem burning audio CD's.

what is the speed of the media, try dropping the speed of the drive to 8 or 10 see if that works. I have the same setup and have no problems, let it default settings for over a year.

Those cdr's ya use, what are they rated for??

I see yer burning at 16x, but if the max for these discs is 12x, then that might be yer problem.

they are 16x. well after coaster #7(various attempts trying different tracks and even a few attempts at copying ) i decided to try one of my remaining sony cdrs to see if it was my media, it got to 87% and pow i see those dreadful words again. ooo i am wanting to give my burner a right hook right now. but i know violence never solved any computer problems of mine. i feel that i should have never updated the firmware. . argh

edit >> i should add that i reinstalled nero after coaster no. 5 and got a strange driver error

Sorry, but are you using latest 5.5.8.2 version of Nero ? It has better compatibility with W2K and XP.

Also may I suggest (if you have not tried already) burning with other software to make certain that this is not a hardware related issue?

    Cheers!

"...ive tried cleaning the drive ..."
What exactly does that mean? Have you tried to lower your write speed to 10 or 12 as suggested before?

Could be a hardware problem, of course. But I doubt it. Keep that as the last option. You haven't mentioned your OS so I'm assuming it's XP.

As NDC suggested, go to Nero homepage, download 5.5.8.2 version (around 11MB). This is a demo version if you don't have Nero and a upgrade one if you do,

Upgrade your version. I doubt it will work but try it to rule it out. Next, if you still get a coaster (You guys are lucky CDs are a dime each. I remember them at $5 each), I'd set up the system from scratch, after formatting. Only load XP and Nero. Upgrade Nero. Now if you still get a coaster, drive's faulty. Use all default settings in Nero.

If it burns OK, load your applications and keep burning CDs to see if some application is causing any conflict.

If all else fails, return the drive.

    Good Luck.

How about something simple? Try a defrag before your burning sessions.

    Cheers!

i did reinstall win xp pro after coater #20 and installed nero, still got some more coasters. next day pc wouldnt post , due to cheapo $30 memory crappin out on me (my theory ive derived from my limited diagnostics ex: its not the vid card cause im using it now, same with the hd), so now ive dug out my old k62 400 set the case on its side layed the board on it conneceted it up and it will have to do untill i get another stick of 256mb 2100, i then attempted to clean the drive with phillips lens sweeping cd ,i still burn coasters , i did however manage to burn a small data backup cd with the windows built in burning app. its wierd how this all suddenly happend, it was a great burner up till now. now im usin my old serial mouse which makes my optical look great. and befor my memory went out i did try a defrag before burning in fact that was one of the first things i tried. Its sorta been nice with this old 400 i can actually hear stuff. the only thing i havent tried yet is updating nero, but it would take a while with 46.2 k an i dont think its the problem anymore.

the only thing i can think of that might be the problem is me updating the firmware. i can try to fool the firmware updater into reverting to an earlier version, but i have no idea how to do this
