| What happened to my Lacie? It's smoking!
I have a Lacie hard drive that is smoking at the power port. I mistakenly tried to insert (without forcing) the plug from the power supply into the drive with the wrong orientation of the plug. There was a pop and flash followed by smoke. Every time i plug the drive in it doesn't power on and emits smoke instead. What did
I do? And what do I need to do? |

dude, you already have a thread on this in another section, you only posted it 5 minutes before this one, if your that impatient I suggest you call the customer support hotline for your product and ask them.
people on these boards have lives outside of here, and not everyone knows everything in every category, so be a little patient and give people a chance to answer.
in the meantime I suggest you STOP using the dang hard drive, or at least stop plugging it in, you'd think the first time with smoke, sparks and what not a person would STOP using the dang thing, but you mention every time you plug it in it doesn't power on and emits smoke. don't you think thats a sign that somethings seriously wrong with it? so why keep trying, when it results in the same thing each time.
most likely you fried the power connector or something on the circuit board inside the case the first time. its possible the hard drive inside is ok, possible, but not 100% positive on that), in which case, you could take it out of the casing and get another enclosure and install it in that and see if its still there, or even plug the drive into your PC if you have a spare port in the case/motherboard.
most of the time with Computers and associated Electronics, when they start to emit smoke, especially after a pop, sparks/flash, its a safe bet its fried, dead, gone, kaput, etc etc etc...
unless this incident is covered under warranty from the manufacturer, or your good with electronics, soldering, etc, your only real option is to take it apart and see if the drive inside is still good, if so, your safe this time (data on the drive). not much else you can do at this point, unless like I said if its covered under warranty or your good with soldering electronic components etc etc.

If something goes pop/bang and starts pumping out smoke, who (in their right mind) would try plugging it back in again...???
Would you do the same with your car...?
"Well, I did something and my car burst into flames. I tried doing it again, and it started burning again......."

No worries, we've all done something stooput in our times... Generally it can be measured in the number of "oh-no-seconds" before we realise what we've done...

Generally, if a "pop" and smoke are involved in any electronic part, you fried whatever it is that is "popping" and smoking. |
