Maxtor external drive
To backup files against a computer breakdown, do I just copy the relevant files to an external drive like Maxtor, and then hook up the Maxtor drive to my new computer? Is that all there is to it?

You can copy n paste data files that you've created or get a product like Acronis True Image and make an exact clone of your drive.
