By type, I mean SATA or IDE, I don't really know what the difference is or which is better (can anyone help here as well?), but how do I know which of these my HDD is? |

SATA is newer and faster and the cables are smaller in size.

The large Gray "Ribbon" cable indicates an IDE Drive. The much smaller cable is SATA.

Is the grey ribbon really fat? Well really wide and thin I mean.
