| BENQ DVD DD DW1620 problems
i have a BenQ DVD-rw drive... under xp it worked correctly, recognizing dvd-rw's and cd's .. now it won't recognize any cd's or cd-r, cd-rw's .. only dvd's and dvd-rw discs ..IT does burn great to dvd-rw's .. no problems there... i have flashed the drive to the latest firmware .. I have also read online that this is a common problem with this drive but have yet to see someone post a fix to this.. I upgraded to Vista then re-formatted to Windows 7 Ultimate. this is the only thing causing me problems under windows 7 ... all the drivers are up to date etc...?
any thoughts or help would be appreciated

Hi, Sweeper:
Does the drive recognize a bootable CD? That would be a way to test if the CD laser is actually working. Often, if a drive does not recognize CDs but does recognize DVDs, or vice versa, I suspect a laser failure. Of course, if this machine is a Dell, you could run the Dell diagnostics from a bootable USB drive. |

I tried flashing to an older firmware... still the same... it makes noise and the light blinks.. but then stops and doesn't recognize the cd ... but yet will read a dvd and burn dvd's just fine...? I ended up flashing back to the latest firmware and still the same... I guess I should look maybe for just a cd-rw drive.. ? or a dvd-rw drive... odd... if the laser was failing... i would think it would burn or read dvd's either...? |

Go to Newegg for the drive. They have the best selection. |
