Fellow Members:
My goal is to consolidate *data from
multiple FAT32 formatted ["source"] HDDs to a couple of NTFS formatted ["target"] HDDs. All HDDs and data involved in this "endeavor" are from
computers running Win2KPro. [
*Documents, MP3s & photos]
I searched the TechIMO archives and read the threads of other members who had asked how to convert FAT32 partitioned data to NTFS formated partitions.
The threads devoted to this topic proved educational. However, given the age and variance of the archived information, I feel compelled to run this by fellow members yet one more time.
In order to convert a
FAT32 volume to an
NTFS file system in Win2KPro or in WinXP [according to what I've read], one can utilize
Convert.exe, aka the
"Convert Command."
For examble, to convert data on FAT32 partition "E" to a NTFS file system on the same partition, I would:
1. Click Start > Run >
CMD > OK.
2. Type
CONVERT E: /FS:NTFS. Press Enter.
However, as I indicated above, my goal is to transfer the "converted file system" data to a different HDD. . . a HDD that has already been set up with a NTFS file system.
This leads me to the following question:
Can I simply copy & paste or otherwise transfer files from the
FAT32 volume to a NTFS partition on a different HDD,
without first converting the FAT32 "source" volume? Or,
must I first convert the FAT32 volume
before I can transfer, i.e., copy & paste its contents to a different HDD with a NTFS file system?
I sense that I'll first have to convert
then transfer the data, but no harm in checking the availability of a shortcut.
Thx, Brangwen
