| SATA DVD RW on Asus P5S MX SE?
I hope this is in the right forum; would it possible for me to put a SATA optical drive (DVD RW in particular) on my motherboard i.e. Asus P5S MX SE? I was originally using an IDE HP Combo Drive, but am thinking of replacing it. So, is it possible to swap, switch, change etc. the IDE plug/sockets to SATA or does my mobo have it? |

first of all, you should of done a search for your motherboard on Asus's site...
nothing wrong with finding an answer on your own...
you obviously know your motherboards model...
but here it is anyways, ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
on the specs tab, shows 2 SATA ports, so yes, buy a SATA drive, install in case, hook up and you should be good to go.
as to changing IDE connectors to SATA, there are adapters that attach to a SATA drive, can have IDE connectors on them, so yes its possible, but really only intended for Motherboards with ONLY IDE/PATA connectors and have no route to install a PCI or PCIE SATA expansion card. since buying a SATA optical drive, then buying the adapters is just added cost, could buy a standard IDE/PATA version of the same optical drive and save some cash.

I did first try a search to see if it was possible, but I couldn't really find an answer.
And I forgot to clarify something else, I'm talking about the Power Cable, not the other main one. I was able to fit the thinner cable in the mobo but I couldn't find a place for the other one.

There is the SATA Cable and there is the Power SATA which has a longer socket on the DVD RW than the other one. My optical drive before that used that long, wide grayish wire with pins on each end. I can't find an end for the SATA Power cable on my mobo. |

| are you talking about something like one of these? http://lagwar.com/home/wp-content/up...IDE_cable2.jpg
Cause if so SATA doesn't use them. BTW Their data transfer cables not power.
