Can I use my IBM Thinkpad T42 CD/DVD Drive to an external USB drive for Mini?

    Hello,

I recently bought a Dell Mini 10v and was wondering if I can use the DVD/CD drive I have in my Thinkpad T42 and convert it to an external DVD/CD drive?
    Something similar to the following:
    DELL 8X DVD±RW External USB Drive for Dell Studio 14z / Inspiron Mini 9/ 10v/ 12 Laptops : Storage, Drives & Media | Dell

If so, can you send me any links for proper conversion kits?

He's asking whether or not it has a row of pins like on this harddrive here https://www.knudde.be/ide_vs_scsi/ide.jpeg

    Sata uses something else.

suggestion: refurbished drive or new drive

The T42 is IDE-based. You would need to find a connection kit for a slim-DVD. And even if you find a kit I'm not sure if there is a standard for that connector. Bear in mind that the drive from T42 usually is a DVD-ROM & CD-RW.

I would instead buy a new usb 2.0-based external drive. That will most likely cost less than finding a conversion kit for an IDE based slim-DVD or buy a refurbished IBM-external drive for as little as $10:

    Refurbished external drives:
    Compuvest Corp.

Other new drives from as low as $45 + p&p:

Great, thanks a lot for your help. You're right, it is the DVD-ROM & CD-RW.
    Much appreciated.
