hi everyone, i have a 20gb fireball ap drive that i bought in a trade..it's been going great for about 8 months...and this morning it started making some awful noises...grinding, with a high pithced squeel(kinda like a camera makes when the flash is building) ..as well as a click...now i know to beware of the click...besides back things up in a hurry...does anyone have any suggestions... just thought i'd ask |

I had a customer run a noisy drive for 2 months without failure before he finally allowed us to replace it. He was too lazy to transfer his data to backup. The manufacturer had sent a new drive to me but I couldn't get the guy to let me come by and replace it. Go figure.
Then again your drive could go out tonight. Get your data backed up while you still can.

does it make any sense to use the drive as a slave...it seems stupid to use a failing drive as a storage device...but i'm either going to change it out and let it sit there..or use it till it dies as o.s drive.. ? |

ok, i have another question... which to buy...
maxtor 20 gb 7200 ata100- $139.95
western digital 40gb- 5400 ata66 - $169.95
the reason i only give the 2 choices are they are local shops i deal with... p.s all prices in cdn money
edit> my mobo does support ata100 |

You do not have to have the receipt usually to RMA a drive. Just call the company and tell them the drive is dead. More than likely, you will get a replacement. Most drives have a 3 year warranty.

Dave is right, I went to the WD site once and typed in the Serial Number for my drive and the web site told me if it was still in warranty or not. Maxtor may have something simular. Give it a shot, you might get lucky.
Mike EDIT: I did remember correctly, Maxtor did aquire Quantum didn't they?
