New ssd drives / humorous mtbf

I was just on NE's site looking at today's sale on OZC ssd drives. The specs note that the mtbf is 1,500,000 hours. At 24/7 operation, this converts to 171.232876712 years. If all holds true, then my nice new drive would conk out in the year 2181. At which time I'd have to buy a new one but, of course, I would not be disappointed since the drive would have only have cost me $.59 per year. What I found humorous is that OZC is only giving the thing a 3 yr warranty.

The MTBF is an educated guess, at best. Sort of like the ratings on tires.

Think of it this way. If I ran 1000 drives each for a year and had only one failure, I could give it an MTBF of 500 years.

I still it's funny, especially when these same manufactures will give their system RAM a "lifetime" warranty. And again, as most of us know, that's more a less a formality since obsolescence will determine service life anyway.

"Lifetime warranty" usually means for the life of the company.

Gee, all this time I thought "Lifetime Warranty" on memory meant the life of the memory. Once its dead the warranty expired.
