Sata 300 hard drive compatable with 150 mobo?
Hello, I have a old system from 2005. I have upgraded some parts with the years but my mobo is still really old. My HDD recently stopped working. Since im not in the position to buy a new system right now but later this year (June, july or august) I was thinking if it would be possible for me to buy a sata 300 HDD now and use it for my current sata 150 mobo and later use it for my new sata300 mobo. That brings me to the question: is it possible for me to buy an sata300 HDD and use it now for my Sata 150 and later use it for my sata 300 mobo? ive searched some on the internet but i never get a straight answer, some say you need to put jumpers and other say you can just stick it in. Do i need a certain HDD? I live in sweden so dont send links to products but tell me the name of the product or series and i find it myself
ThanksLast edited by chiha; April 26th, 2010 at 04:30 PM.

Yes it''ll work. I believe you have to set the jumper pin to a different pin.

SATA hard drives are backward, and forward comparable.
I have never seen a jumper on a SATA drive, that is a IDE thing.
Western Digital and Seagate is all I trust.
Edit: I see they do have jumpers, just not for slave and master.
150s, don't use them, but 300s do, to run at 150.Last edited by stroyal; April 26th, 2010 at 03:25 PM.

Thanks for your help both of you. Are you sure all of the sata 300 hdd's are compatable with Sata 150? Could it be that maybe some brands doesnt support this but some does?

I just looked up Seagate and WD 300s, and they both have a jumper setting to revert back to 150.
Here is the Seagate page.
How To Install and Troubleshoot Serial ATA (SATA) Hard Drives | Seagate
Google "SATA jumpers" for the western digital page.
It's a PDF and I don't know how to link to it.

The way that Seagate page is worded, it seems like some motherboard controllers don't need the jumper.
Although they could be talking about 300 controllers.Hard Sayin Not Knowin

Yep, you will just need to add the jumper.
