my external hard drive isnt recognized
im new to all this so I need all the help I can get.
I have a WD MyBook 500gb ext.hard drive.
I plug it in to my laptop and it doesnt show in My Computer. and im using Vista.
The lights turn on and everything so im guessing its not a power issue.
The same thing happens on my desktop pc
Any suggestions?

Has the drive ever been dropped or banged real hard?

Have you tried hooking it up to another usb port on laptop?
Try hooking it up to another computer and see if it is visible on that, if it is, you'll know its your laptop, if it isnt, you'll know it could be a fault with the external.

Make sure the valve cover isn't slightly warped too - I changed gaskets 3 times before realizing. At least on my 1988 it's aluminum, not sure yours had the same issue in your year.
