    WD-caviar black 1-T / WD1002FAEX help

Hi to all, this is my first post sorry it's so long…..I consider myself a low tech level although I have built around 9 systems for myself, friends and family. I learn a lot on every build and the one I’m doing now is no expectation, It has had me banging my head aginst the wall a lot more than usual (or maybe not).
    Parts: MB-Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H /CPU- AMD-955 PIIX4 /MEMORY-G.Skill DDR3-1333 pc3-10600 8-8-8-21 8gb /HDD-WD-black caviar sata 6.0GBS -7200rpm(WD1002FAEX) single drive system /Power Supply-Corsair TX-650 watt /DVD-CD-RW Liteon 24X sata drives(2) a very basic system with room to grow.
Tested the power supply-good, did the build, cleared coms, powered up, went to bios and loaded optimized defaults saved and exited. Powered down and then back up, back to bios set timing for ram to manual and set it to 8-8-8-21 time ,date, boot priority, check to see if HDD was recognized….just the basics so I could load the OS-Win7pro x64. Powered down then back up opened a drive and popped in the 7 pro install disk and things seemed a bit slow and vary sluggish went ahead with install and about 90% into expanding files I get “file missing error code 0x80070015” open the drive and shut down. Next try (2nd) check bios, try install, about the same place I get “boot manager missing” error code the next try (3rd) It went on to install but saved the old data from 1st and 2nd attempts to old windows folder. No big deal if it works? The system was up and running but very slow and sluggish, updated, loaded system utilities, drives and A-V, activated OS. I shut the system down for a few minutes and powered back up….hangs, retarded movement and blue screened. Retested PS (ok), tested RAM in my main PC (ok), tested HDD with WD-lifeguard diagnostics tools run from other PC (ok) ….Bad MB? Bad CPU? Bad OS install? Bad bios? So I flashed the bios with the newest Ver. didn’t seem to make much difference. Re-ran HDD diag. still passed-OK so I did a complete wipe-drive (boot and nuke) and moved on to reinstalling the Win 7 pro x64 OS. After 5 tries and failures when it got to/near the end of expanding windows files (at the point of booting) it would error “boot manager missing”….Bad OS install disk? I re-wiped the drive as before and tried to install XP x86 it wouldn’t quick format hang on 20% then error. I formatted it via the other PC and at about 20% copying files it errors “disks maybe corrupt”. Out of complete “I don’t know what to do” I grabbed an older WD- Blue 320gb-sata 8GB I had wiped a year ago, hooked it up and popped in the Win. 7 pro x64……It installed so fast I hardly had time to keep up with it. The empty system is really fasssst. So what don’t I understand about this drive or better, what am I doing wrong? Do I need to make it a 1.5 with a jumper? My system is sata 3 / 6gb/s is this a controller issue of some kind? Or am I missing something in the bios? Or do I have a bad drive? No errors show when I wipe it? WD-1T black caviar sata 6.0GB/S -7200rpm “WD1002FAEX”
I don’t want to RMA it if I’m the Dummy, Jim M

    Angry Same problem here!

I have the same problem with this WD1002FAEX. The BIOS on my new Gigabyte P55A-UD5 wont detect it, it only shows spaces where the name of the drive should be. And neither my old Packard Bell's Intel MB BIOS can't detect it. I also tryed to install Windows 7 x64 on it, using all the SATA controllers and connectors on the motherboard with all possible combinations of setting in the BIOS. I copied the SATA drivers to a USB flash memory, Windows setup found them..but nothing ,the drive still woudent be detected. I think now that this hard disk drive is a hoax. They've made us, now 1 month of waiting,or more till Western Digital sends us a new functioning HDD...if they do!

Sounds like your system doesn't support this drive. Have you checked for a BIOS update?

just going out on a limb here, but since the drive is a new 64MB cache SATA III HDD, and has some jumpers on the rear of the drive, just curious if anyone has even bothered to attempt configuring the jumpers properly for their systems, on this new hard drive?

seeing as no one has mentioned anything about the jumpers in their posts.

update, after wiping this drive yet another time I installed a jumper on pins 5/6 to set at 1.5gb/s and it installed windows 7 pro and seemed to run ok but not as fast as the old WD-blue 320 8mb cache, after the install I pulled the jumper and the system locked up, put it back and it ran fine. The gigabyte board does support 6g stata 3. There seems to be an issue with this HDD so I did the RMA, I bet I don't have any problems with the WD- black 640 32mb cache or 750's. I did look at the jumper settings at WD's web-site and I should have tried 1 to 2 jumper before giving up.

was going to say, you should of tried Jumper settings for SATA II... and the instructions for that is right there on the sticker on the drive itself.

not sure, but should have been install and use it, MB is sata III -6gb/s. the bios were set for that. One conflict is on the drive it says 5-6 jumper= 3.0gb/s but on the WD web-site
it shows 5-6 jumper= 1.5gb/s....default all open.....1-2 jumper= SSC enabled..... 7-8= Adv format....3-4= PUIS. With the jumper on 5-6 it was slow compared to the new 640 in the system now. It sounded like rocks in a can when it ran. On a side note I had to RMA yet another this time a WD-black 750 it just stop working-died in 3 hours never put one item on it. replacement coming......
