    Unknown disk space

    Hello,
I have just run a program called Spacesniffer which shows how your hard drive is filled.

On it I have an unknown portion of 16.7GB. Does anyone know of a similar free program that would let me see this?

I tried Tree Size also, it said my C drive was 67GB but it says 103GB in Explorer.

    Any help appreciated

    Thanks

The unknown space might be hidden files or system restore files.

As for the size of your C drive, if you are reading the number at the top of the window in tree size it is showing the amount of used space.

The bottom of the Tree Size window will tell you the amount of free space and then in parenthesis your total drive size.

    Did you mean unknown Partition?

Is the pc a store bought machine like a Dell or HP?

If so, the space is probably your recovery info so you can reinstall the OS.

    Hi, thanks for the replies.

The laptop was a freebie with a mobile phone, its a HP. Can this unknown section of files be deleted, if it is recovery info, or am I safer to keep it?

"IF" you have another copy of the OS on DVD and or don't think you'll EVER need to reinstall the OS - then delete away.

No copy on DVD. Probably best to keep the restore files then :-)

    Thanks for your help
