    Laptop Product Recovery

    Hi,

I've got a Toshiba Satellite L40 18Z laptop running on Vista and when I tried to re-install and format it, I came across a big problem.

It formats the hdd and the stops at 2% with an error command and will not continue.
So I then tried to install Windows XP but it said it could not find the hard drive.

Some one advised that I buy a new hard drive which I did and still the same error command shows.

Does any one know how to correct this?

If you do, please keep it simple as I'm only a learner.

    Any advice would be welcome.

    Thanks.

    Frank.

I'm not sure what an "error command" is...Do you mean Error Message? If so, what exactly does the error say?

    Hi Steve,

Yeah I did mean "Error Message".

And when I try to install the Toshiba recovery disc I eventually end up with the following message:

    Error: 231
    Restoring C:\program files\ common files\java\update\base images\jre1.6.0.oem.b104\core1.zip.
    Error restoring image.
    Data error <cyclic redundancy check>.
Error: ImageX could not apply VISTA F:\05661xsp.swm Index 2 from ODD to C:\!

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Frank.

Check your recovery disk for scratches or are you trying to do a recovery from the recovery partition? If its the later then you need to get the recovery/installation disk. If you have the disks then check for scratches often times errors like that occur when there are bad areas on the disk. You might also try to contact Toshiba for a replacement.

As for the drive not being seen in XP and the need for a new HDD. That sounds like some bad advice. The drive is likely a SATA drive and you probably just need to install the drivers for the drive for XP to see it.
