Need Backup Ideas

Here's my scenario:

I have a graphics guy that is going to be working on a project that is between 500-700MB (one single file).

When he is working on it and saving it to the server, it creates mucho network congestion.
Plus, it maxes out our nightly tape backup when it is put on the server.

We need to be able to back this file up unattended and reliably every night.

He has a cd-rw drive in his PC, but don't you have to format the CDRW media everytime you overwrite it?
He can't waste 30-45 minutes everyday backing it up.

We also need to keep it on the cheap (under 250 preferably)

so;

Unattended, daily backup of a single file approx 500-700mb and on the users PC ( not over network) win98se

I am not 100% sure but didn't Iomega make a Jaz drive that had 1 gig tapes? That maybe be a viable alternative. They came out awhile ago so I am sure you could pick one up new or used for pretty cheap. Then as the guy leaves for the night he drags the file to the drive and it copies during the night. Just an idea.

If there is a spare bay in the PC, try one of those removeable harddrive IDE cages. You can just use the task scheduler to run a batch job to copy it to the spare disk. You can swap it out every week or month if you need incremental backups and put it in a safe place.

From the sounds of it, CDRW would not be an options since the size of one file is close to 700 MB. I agree that you would be looking at either external storage or another internal drive to back up to regularly. I would still have a backup on the server though weekly or monthly. Maybe invest in a DAT tape backup system. I backup over 17GB on one tape in about 3 hrs.

Hi,

Along a similar line to Imanage. Is it possible to install an additional drive into this guys w/station that he can just use for backups?

I use a shareware backup tool and have one drive(separate hardware not a partition) dedicated purley for storage of files which I use to back up 4 different folders which is where all the stuff gets stored. These are My Docs where most of my stuff is filed in a number of other folders, A company related one arranged similarly to My Docs with each supplier having their Own folder and two related to AOL- The Filing Cabinet and Address Book.I figure that if my machine(c drive) dies I'll be able to get all the info back again from this drive.

To you more experienced guys. Is this a sensible way of doing things or am I looking for trouble?

Cheers

I vote the removeable IDE route... Under 3 gig drives can be had for the change you can find in the crack of your sofa cushions...

It is definitely a good idea to backup to another seperate drive, not partition. You do need to make sure your important data is offsite or at the very least off that machine once in a while. If your machine is stolen or you have a disaster, you need to be able to restore your data from the offsite backup. What you could do it invest in a removable hard drive bay and once you have done the backup, remove the drive and store it safely.

Thanks for all of the suggestions

He has a Dell case and there is no room for another HDD (internally) plus I like my backups off-site.

Rem-HDD definitly a good route.

But,

Guess what I just found in one of our old servers?.....a JAZ 2GB and two tapes!....niiiiice

I'm going to order a scsi card now ( luckily he has one free PCI slot.....one )

Looks like the best route for now...thanks again people....all viable suggestions.

ALOHA
I use removable HD a WD 100g 149.99 at Sams club!Right now WD 100gSE w8mb cache 149.99 after rebate at CompUSA.

It is much faster than Anything else and if you put spare trays on other computers you can do massive file share without network traffic.

Just don't bang the drives around treat them like "Glass"!

Added benefit is cooling fans on the trays.

Just set your bios to auto detect and as long as you have a new board\bios it will autodetect easy.
