I'd stick with Western Digital, or Seagate.

Below are complete drives, as you can also purchased the drive and enclosure separately.

They come in 3.5 and 2.5.
The 3.5 will always have an AC adapter, as the USB buss doesn't have enough power.
A powered HUB can also be used, instead of the adapter

2.5s come with and without, an AC adapter, as they can run off the USB power.
Most have no adapter included, but can be purchased separately.
I've made my own before, out of an old 5V adapter from a tape player, or electric razor.

Speed is the only other factor, I can think of 5400 vs 7200

They also make 1394a/b (fire wire), and eSATA, as well as combination of them, but are not worth the usually extra money IMO.

How much do you want to spend?

I've also seen one 3.5" drive in an enclosure (where I used to work, as it goes) which didn't have a power adapter...but it did need to have two USB ports - one was for the data and the other for power..
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...

I have the 2.5" WD My Passport 250GB HDD & have been very happy with it over the years. I never installed the WD software, just plug it in and do manual backups. I like that it doesn't need a seperate power supply.

    Here's a link to the 500GB & 750GB models.
