What set-up is best suited for me? (advice needed)

I have 3 computers in my house - a laptop, desktop, and tablet, and 3 external hard drives.

One of these hard drives is the Lacie LACinema, which is plugged via HDMI into the back of my television.

I will put video/image files on that, and be able to view them on the TV.

The problem I have is that HDD's die, and I am fearful of losing what is on there. So naturally I'm now looking into options which will mean losing a hard disk is less of a worry than before.

I have looked into the likes of Drobo, and Western Digital Sharespace, but I've not seen one with HDMI output.

Can you please advise as to what set up is best suited for me?

I'd like to back all of these external drives up onto this new drive, so data loss becomes less of a worry, but also have the usability that I had before.

    Thanks for any help!

How much data do you want to backup? I havent seen any media play device with an HDMI that is used for backing up. Your best bet is just to backup the data that is important to you, so if you lose a drive you have the data elsewhere

Thanks, I'm thinking, if I were to use the USB from the LaCie into this new device, then I could back that up on the fly, and still utilize the hdmi from the LaCie, then dump everything else onto this new device, that is if nothing does exist with a hdmi out like you suggest. Any thoughts on what device would suit?

Again I go back to my first question, how much total data do you need to back up right now?

3-4Gb over the three external devices, and maybe another 1Gb internal stuff.

Oh wow so you really dont have much data at all! Most of the time we have people on here asking about 1 Tb+ of data! lol

Do you have a DVD burner by chance? DVDs can store up to 4.7 GB of data. I guess the next questions are this:

    1) How often do you add/remove data from those drives?
    2) Do you see any potential growth in the next year or so?
    3) Are all the computers connected to a network so they can talk to each other?
    4) How big are your external disk that you have?

My thought process is this, if all the computers are on a network that allow each of them to talk then move all the data to one USB drive (share it out, this means the pc will need to be on all the time if users want to access it and large enough to store all the data) then use the other external drives to back up the data.

That way you dont need to buy anything, does that make sense?

    Thanks,

It's interesting, but I'm wanting a local option.

Have you (or anybody) had any dealings with the likes of:

    WD ShareSpace

    or

    Drobo S

    (or any similar)

    Cheers
