SSD Questions
I currently have a 1TB and 300GB HD and I've been hearing a lot about SSDs lately and have some questions.
- What is so good about them?
- Are they just used for gaming or having applications on them to run faster?
- What is the compatibility for them?
- What is important when looking to buy one?
- How much does a decent one cost?
Thank you!

Lets take these one by one:
- What is so good about them?
The decrease load times for applications, boot times for your OS, run faster and cooler and are less likely to fail
- Are they just used for gaming or having applications on them to run faster?
Gamers and people that need faster access to apps benefit more than the avg user but anyone can see a performance boost from them
- What is the compatibility for them?
Compatible with just about any system that has a SATA port
- What is important when looking to buy one?
Reviews, reviews, reviews! Buy a newer one, they are a bit cheaper and usually faster
- How much does a decent one cost?
Depends on how much storage you want. Prices are dropping but they are still pretty expensive.
Now all that answered, the real question is would you need one or is it cost effective to buy one. Well if you are just an avg user that browses the web and maybe runs a few basic apps then IMO you aren't going to see a major boost. Yeah start-up times will drop and load times for apps will too. But for the most part that isn't enough to warrant the cost. If you are a gamer, or someone that needs to access data quicker then go for it.

Thanks a lot for the reply.
I am a gamer and I'm a freshmen in college who is going to study graphic design, so I'd imagine I'd want to put photoshop, illustrator, indesign etc on them.

$1 a gig, has been the point that everyone has been looking for, and most, are at that price, or a little lower.
Still more expensive than rotating drives.
From what I have read, Intel, are the most dependable, but I'm not sure how much more dependable, as they cost a lot more. (on sale, the 128 is about $1 a gig)
New Egg sells a ton of Crusial, with great feed back.
Not sure what to think of that, as I haven't read anything else to support that observation.
IMO, SATA I is a waste for SSDs.
SATA 3, takes the best advantage of SSDs
Photoshop, should take good advantage of an SSD.
One of the first uses of SSD that I herd of, was a scratch drive, for Photoshop, and they were small.
I don't have one yet, but my next 2 builds will.
I'm going with Intel, because I'm sick of researching them.Last edited by stroyal; July 19th, 2012 at 11:42 AM.
