Previously Working Seagate Backup Plus Portable Cannot be Detected
We just got a new Seagate Backup Plus Portable 1TB hard drive. For the last few days it worked perfectly but all of a sudden the device couldn't be read. It couldn't be read by our Sony Bravia TV and plugging it into both Mac and Windows OS, we had trouble because the device didn't appear on the list of devices connected to the computers. No device name would appear and when you check Device Manager in Windows, the driver doesn't appear under the category hard disks and there was no other devices category as well. We don't know what to do since all the troubleshooting guides can only troubleshoot if the device appeared in your explorer whereas ours isn't even detected. The light blinks however when you connect it but the device can't be seen on the explorer.
We tried if it was detected on the Sony Bravia, 2 MacBooks, and a Windows Desktop with no result. It couldn't be detected. Help would really be appreciated.
And if its any help, when you plug the device into a Windows PC the prompt to "fix the hard drive" appears before the autoplay kicks in when you press continue instead.Last edited by ModdedWharfare; September 21st, 2012 at 08:52 AM. Reason: Wrong word

Without seeing more than what you've put above, it sounds like it could be a failed/failing drive...
With it being an external drive, when you turn it on, can you hear and/or feel it spinning up..?I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

No sounds or anything. Its a backup plus portable. the little light just lights up and thats it. if ever it does "die," can the files stored still be recovered somehow?

Sounds like the motor may have packed in, the light on the front that you're referring to is effectively just the 'controller' (usually running some form of Linux) that deals with the USB and/or LAN access the the HDD (usually either IDE or SATA) rather than the accessibility/health of the drive itself...
It is possible to get the data back, but it is likely to cost you a fair chunk of change...and I've got no idea where that can be done in the Philippines...I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

We just got a new seagate , means it's still under warranty and maybe you can hold the buyer responsible for the Data loss as well as replacing it ... But that can be achievable if the external didn't suffer a heavy shock ...

Since it's supposed to be a "backup" drive, do you still have the original data? You'd be better off recovering that way with software than hoping for Seagate to help you!
Obama: The rich have the Federal Reserve and the poor have Harry Reid... LOL. Life really is unfair!

I had the same problem with Seagate Backup Plus Portable 1TB.
Win7 and Win XP could not recognize the device.
My friend advised me about same problem happened with him due to fault in original Seagate cable 3.0 USB.
He checked HDD with his cable connected and it works!!!
So, I bought cheapest 3.0 USB cable and connect all to my laptop - ALL WORKS!!!
Suggesting to all users of Seagate - please check connection with PC by using any other 3.0 USB Cable.
