    What are the odds ...

of recovering any data from a laptop HDD after the laptop was smashed onto the patio 5 times?

Depends on the state of the HDD. If the laptop case was able to protect the HDD from any physical damage, you may be able to plug it into an external drive housing and copy the data off that way.

Your chances are a lot better if the laptop was turned off when it was smashed the first time as the HDD would have been locked at that point, preventing the read/write arm from damaging the drive platters inside. HDDs have a high shock tolerance, somewhere around 250g when they are turned off.

Any reason it was done 5 times...?

    OCD much..?

Anyway, it will depend on whether the drive was spinning at the time, but also whether the heads have hit the platters or not........if they have, buhbye...
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...

Were you trying to prevent data being recovered? Like before disposing of... or did you just have a temper tantrum?

No. It tripped and fell down the stairs. Or it walked into a door. 5 times.
Seriously, the chances aren't too bad, but don't be disappointed if it is a write-off.
