PCI IDE controller card for older computer to use bigger HD
I have a PIII 500 waiting to use a couple of 80 GB HD as a file server. Will this Promise Ultra/66 Controller w/UDMA66 Cable for $9.99 do the trick? I remember someone posting that UDMA66 Promise PCI IDE cards will work just fine for HDs under 120GBs. Anyone have the experience of using one of these?

It's me again...
It will work well, and at that price you can't beat it!
I'll pick up a few more!

And, if you want to RAID those hard drives, there is a way to modify your Promise ATA 66 to a Fastrakk 66 RAI Dcard by grounding out one of the pins.
The article shows one method of soldering the resistor to a pin on the board, but you only have to ground it out, so removing the screw that holds the metal plate on the back and clamping it back down on the resistor will do the trick as well, if you want to do this.
The 128 GB limit appears to be a limit per hdd from what the data sheet says.
Nice card for the price!!

I've modded a few of these cards with success.
I have not been able to get the updated drivers to load properly when modded though. Haven't really pursued the issue either.
When used as a standard controller there are issues with the version 1.43 Win9x driver, use the updated 1.60 version.

I was hoping you would help answer the question.... I just forgot your handle...
Thanks for the link. With the card being under 10 bux, it's worth a shot.
Sweet... I was thinking this was a pretty good price; just wanted to make sure we were all talking about the right card. Now to wait for CSO to give something else away (ie video card, speakers, etc) to make this one even sweeter bwah hah hah hah hah
edit: SWEET! I had an order pending with them and due to a shortage of the free nVidia Vanta 16mb video cards, the order was still not shipped. So I called them and had them add two of these babies on without additional shipping! Oh yeah!!!!!
