I am really frustrated.. probably so much so that I am missing something that should be obvious. I am using Abit KG7-RAID and have been backing up my c: drive to another hd on the raid controller. The backup is done is real dos mode. It has worked fine for several weeks but just this week the backup program couldn't find the backup drive (it happens to be e. I have had problems with the raid controller destroying data before so I moved the drive to ide-2. DOS does not see the drive there either. I get "invalid device specification" when entering :e:". I have tried the drive in another pc and it works fine there. I deleted the partition and reformatted but still get the same problem. What is strange is that I can see and access the drive in Windows 98. Also, in dos mode fdisk sees the drive and will display the partition information.
Maybe, just wipe the whole hd clean with something like partition magic or some other program.
Also what hd brand is it, You can usually get a util that will check it for defects, Like ibm's DFT.
This is an update if you are interested. Since the drive is seen in windows (with hd drivers) and not dos I thought the problem must be in the bios. I re-flashed the bios and the drive is now ok on the 1st ide controller. I haven't tried it yet on the raid controller. I'm now scared to death of it.
I did have to completely reformat the drive though.
I'm not sure and just curious but wouldn't the controller have to have real mode drivers for it to function in DOS mode? When drivers are required in Windows for it to function properly isn't it ususall required to have drivers in DOS as well?

I don't know how to answer your question, but when I boot into dos I can see the drive as e: and can access it without loading any special drivers. I have not tried looking in windows without the supplied drivers.
