Dell dimension ???

My uncle has a Dell Dimension 4100 with the following.

Intel mobo
P3@933
"dell" WD 40 gig 7200 2m buffer
256 pc133 sdram
mobo chipset ?

I'm sending him a Maxtor D740X 40 gig drive for Xmas as he is out of room on the WB. I'm a AMD fan and know nothing about Intel chipsets.

My ? is whether his comp is ata66 or ata100? If it's ata100 he can install it as the slave but if it's a ata66 I would be inclined to send a ata133 pci card along with the drive.

Thanks
WB

Should be ATA100/ 133. Most boards w/ P3 & up are. Mobo?

My best guess is that it is ATA100 or ATA133. Haven't seen a P3 board w/ ATA66.

probably ata100 already...in any case if he is happy with what he already has why worry about it, just send the drive.

I would think that unless a peep is doing video editing or some other thing involving very large data transfers that the ata66/100/133 wouldnt really make any DRAMATIC difference. I remember when it went from ata66 to 100 that lots of reviews were saying that most hard drives barely taxed the ata66 standard, let along ata100.

Also to consider is that if he is happy with things, why send an extra part that may be a source of trouble...a drive is easy to install but a pci drive controller is a little more complicated to install/configure.

From what you have told us, I wouldnt even worry about sending a controller, just send the drive.

WOW, thanks for the reply.
I didn't want to register (should have mentioned that) at dell.
Sure appreciate the long post with the info though.
I am going to send a link to this thread to my uncle. That way he can verify the info.

Hey JP
I just wanted to maximize the drives potential.
Never had any issue's with pci controllers in the past and the ATA133 cards can be had relativly cheap.

Thanks
WB

I have an ata 133 card, and it doesn't make a difference in the speed of anything... but, then again, i have mine only running a zip drive and a dvd rom. i would only run it on a hard drive if it was absolutely necessary.
