Constructive posts

Might've helped to have a bit more of a constructive angle on that post, and less inflamatory. That's not his "mom's basement", but rather his own. Anyway..

To be clear, the show is a geek/comedy show, and we have topics on it related to things we find interesting/funny. The last segment of episode 3 Louis does a segment about the Maxtor melody problem. He brings up some of the options mentioned in this thread to fix it, such as freezing it, or using a rubber mallet to unloosen the head. He then proceeds to show it in action..the premise of the shot being that he wasnt sure if it'd work or not, but he was going to film it so that either way he could show the results.

The point of the video is two fold...to have a comedy segment (havent you wanted to try to use a rubber mallet to fix Other things?), and also to inform the viewers of our show about the problem, and point them here (which seems to be the number one resource on trying to recover these drives that we've found).

If there was any expectation that watching the video would make your hard drive work, I, on behalf of downstairstheater, sincerely apolgize. But when your not looking for miracles, try getting liquored up and watching the show again, might find it funnier and leave you in a bit better mood. Its the best I can do.

WOW that was quite a temper tantrum, clubsessions. It's obvious that the video was meant to be humorous and not all that serious.

BTW Welcome to TechIMO joe_DT and bdlou! Keep up the good work with your site.

For those have the problem, I have few experience want to share
I had a 160BG 8mb, it happen the same a yr or 2 yr ago and yesterday.
it made some beep sound, if i put it to external box, it would show CALYPSO... (I can't remember; CALYPSO is can be saw on the harddisk PCB board)

i could heard the the harddisk still spining, but very slowing, so i thought that it's not enough power to spin up due to PCB can't provide enough power. (weird thought) so I decided to use swap 2 PCB boards around and it spin up again.

yesterday, it happen again, i tried to do the same thing, but it won't work.
I listened to the harddisk and heard some "tick-dick" sound. ( i think i heard the same when the first time happen, but i didn't notice). This made me think the header seem can't find the position or can't back to the orginial position. (weird thought again) So i tried to make an intenionally error, hope it will back to its position after error detect. When the harddisk is starting to beep, i unplug the power and plug it again, it spin again. (I didn't plug the cable)

Hope this will help

By the way, ScottW, after you open it up, what your harddisk header position??
I opened an old harddisk and when it power up, the header will back to original position.
After you open it, what do you use to spin it up?
Do all harddisk are in vaccum state?? I heard people said that before
Sorry if my english isn't good.

Yeah. who needs mechanical. The way technology increases, we'll have all RAM disk (like the USB keys) before long. Any engineers want to partner with me and invent the technology that will replace hard drives?

MY MAXTOR STARTED TO SING

hi. my maxtor started to sing. doh! i have a total of 5 hard drives in my computer and 2 of them are maxtor. the singing maxtor was 160gb diamond. after reading this forum, i've tried tapping and banging method. i could hear the hard drive trying to spin (little clicks). i held the hard drive in my hand and i could feel the hard drive spinning again. thank god it worked! i've unplugged that hard drive and ordered western digital to make a back up. my maxtor hard drive was manufactured on Nov/2002. do you know it's 3 years warranty back then or 1 year? thank you.

Greetings, I'm just about to put an 870 slug through this 300gig Maxtor DiamondMax10 Model:6B300R0, which unfortunately whilst I was spending a week in the hospital, having screws, rods, fiberwire and some other things put in my shoulder from a Motorcycle accident, My Father "The Human Virus" decided to infect my Machine with the W32.Sober.S & Sober.X worm (completely screwed my system)...which I run a 200gig dual drive 0 raid combo...so instead of losing all of my data ( which happeneds to be very important) I bought a Fantom External 300gig Drive and was able to back up 98% of my files(183gigs), reformatted both drives, got windows xp pro back up and updated, and was all set to start putting things back in order, I plug in my Fantom hit the switch and guess what, there it is...The "Maxtor Death Ring" which I had no idea wtf that sound was, till I found this thread, so reguardless of the warranty, I disassembled the external to find a F**KING MAXTOR...I've had Problems with Maxtor in the past with 3 80gig drives, and if I would have known Fantom Drives use Maxtor, I NEVER would have bought it, needless to say I was pissed, so I sent an email to Fantom Support, to which I've still not heard a word from, found this thread, and decided to try some of the fixes, did the tapping, hitting, slight pounding...with no success, did the fridge trick with a ziploc bag...again with no success...so if anyone has any other ideas that they can think of, other than sending it off for data recovery, which I'm not going to do, I'll do it myself, I'm just hoping maybe someone has found another easier way or possibly a fix...if not, I'm going to perform Disc surgery...lol...and if I fail at that, I'll make a video of me putting an 870 Slug through this drive, and post it here.

Even if you don't make a video of it, at least take a photo of it post-mortem and post a link. I think it would make a lot of us feel better after seeing it. Good luck.

You can go to the maxtor website, enter in the serial number and it should tell you when the warranty is up.

maxtor sound

Just wanted to thank the people in this thread for the suggestions. Couldn't find anything on the maxtor site and wondering if it was coming from my system after all. Will give the methods a try and cross my fingers. Hopefully one of them will work long enough to get my stuff back.
