Another google search landing.. maxtor 5000dv drive making the musical tone exactly like first post. My drive was working perfectly.. I turned it off and unplugged it to go out of town for a few days. Plugged it back in and here I am/was. After all day fussing trying to get drive letters I realized it wasn't spinning.
I put mine in the freezer for maybe 10 mins.. when I plugged the power back in I also had it tipped at a 45 deg angle or so.. and as I moved it to plug it in I felt it jump and start spinning. That was 2 hours ago.. I'm happily copying off the data I have on it.
Thanks for the thread and replies that gave me the courage to try the freezer just long enough to chill it... dunno, but it's working now. |

then you should get all of your data off it ASAP! :P youre lucky its wokring now. for me and some others it wouldnt work
btw, i was in the same situation as you... it was working just fine, no clues or anything to show that it was failing. then i turn my comp off for 1 hour, shower, come back... then it starts singing a song. |

THE DRIVE IS MECHANICALLY FAILED. WE WORK IN THE HARD DRIVE INDUSTRY AND KNOW IMMEDIAETLY THAT THE DRIVE IS TOTALLY FAILED AND YOU WILL NEED TO SEND IT TO DATA RECOVERY AND/OR TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR REPLACEMENT. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE YOU CAN DO . . . OTHER THAN THROW IT AWAY . . .LIKE OFF A BRIDGE.
REGARDLESS OF THE MAXTOR WEBSITE, THAT IS THE INTERNAL SOUND FOR FAILED DIAGNOSTICS, PERIOD. |

i RMA'd, recieved the replacement, which later failed in less than 2 weeks. this one wasnt musical though, it just started clicking. the clicking went faster and faster, and then boom. it just stopped working. at times, it works for like 10 mins, then it fails again. its pretty much unusable now. not only that, it took my secondary harddrive with it as well. thanks maxtor. |

Hey all, great advice. I had the same symptoms (working fine, suddenly stopped, no spin-up), but I didnt have the musical tune. I tried all the suggestions (freeze overnight, tap it, spin it) but no joy. Finally I swapped the SATA control board for PATA control board of the same same series (120GB Diamondmax Plus 9) and, with the exception of a few bad blocks, R-Studio got ALL my data back.... WAHOO . I don't know it can be done with any of yours, but might be worth a try before spending hundreds on professional recovery? And anyways you'll have a new drive left at the end of it , even though it is a Maxtor! |

Googled maxtor beeps and found this after hours wasted on maxtor site. I have had my 250gb SATA drive for about 2-3 years and have never turned off my system only restarted. Turned system off today as I had to turn off breaker to replace AC unit. Turned on a few hours later and heard this ringtone sound. WTF was that? I knew it wasnt my Abit board. System booted right up on my Raptors so I didnt think anything about it till I went to save a download and it said couldnt find drive G. I dont know how long the warranty is but I guess I will buy a new one and try the knock/freeze fixes to save my mp3's/data.

yep, same thing happened to all of us too. go to maxtor.com and click on support, then warranty services, and something else and enter your serial number. it will tell you if you have warranty or not. |

200 gb maxtor diamond max 10 SATAII singing the tune. Thought I had lost the ol' marbles. As far as your data goes, make arrangements for an advanced replacement rma, when you get the drive, as long as it is EXACTLY the same drive, swap the controller boards, retrieve your data, and voila. send the bad controller board back with the bad drive though, so the serials will match. this will obviously require a third drive for the transfer process. |
