Just wanted to tell you I had this cellphone sound on my Maxtor DiamondMax 9+ 80gb while booting and thanks to you I could make it work! First I tried turning the HD and knock it very gently but no effect. All it took was one quick twist of 90 degrees and the motor became alive. I took it bicycling with me last week. I guess that was too much for it. It did work a few days after that. Dunno if the trip caused it though. I tried to ride smooth :-)
Well, now it's working and I sure did a backup. Let's see if it dies completely.
A lot of important data was not lost after all. |

The harddisk failed completely. It made a lot of loud clicking sounds and didn't boot anymore. I ran a Maxtor diagnostic tool and it said that the HD is failing and must be replaced. Oddly it didn't tell any cause for this. |

Well, a few months ago now, i read pretty much this whole thread trying to find out what was going on with my Maxtor hard drive, as it was making the typical beeping noises. To cut a very long story of pain and frustration short, this is what i did to get mine working.
At certain times, mine wasnt even being detected by the BIOS, or would show up as some wierd Calypso Hard Drive. It seem to be, if i left the hard disk cool down over night and try again, it would perform better. I had to resort to taking the cover off the hard disk, and it kept clunking, and sure enough, the arm was stuck, I nudge it carefully, and it sprung into action. However, it still would not work!!
I had completely give up with the hard disk, and had it stored in the cupboard. Until i found this program: http://www.handyrecovery.com/
I had tried loads of others, but thought id give this a try, so dug out the hard disk, and luckily the BIOS actually detected the drive, but it did not show up in Windows. However, this prog can "Find Partitions" which is what it did. I was then able to recover all my lost files!!!!
I would REALLY give this program a go becuase i had completely given up!

It's hard to believe but another DiamondMax failed on us. This time it was my brother's. I got it spinning and told him to keep his computer on 24/7 until we could get another drive. A week or two ago, the computer got shut down and afterwards the drive was not even being detected in BIOS. He is now using another Maxtor (7200 rpm, but only 2 MB buffer) - a 40 gig that has held up for years and is still in service.
WTF happened to Maxtor?
Seagate was the first to introduce a 5-year warranty, and that should tell you something.
EDIT:
P.S. the replacement drive my sister got is dead too (read the full thread.) I'm either full of crap or I just might be telling the truth. The DiamondMax series has been a total nightmare for my camp.

I find the drives quite reliable. i have 2 80gig versions and it only one failed after two years. other than that no problems at all. i think cit was cuz i was trying to get raid to work on them and i kept on pulling em out and starting and shutting em off to many times too fast. haha oops. and unfortunately i have this habit of not bothering to get the warranty. haha for almost everything i buy |
