250GB hdd, makes the beeping sound. NEED to access the files on it, but banging it or *tapping* as you lot call it, doesn't work Whats this freezing malarky on about? Does it work with this particular problem? | The "magic touch" for my failing HDD was to - power down and disconnect the HDD.
- hold the HDD horizontal (i.e. label facing up) with one hand and then rapidly rotate/twist the HDD in CW and then ACW directions pausing briefly in between (the idea being to cause the platters to turn a little without opening up the HDD case - Note: there is a chance of some surface damage as the heads come unstuck!)
- reconnect and power on.
- repeat 1,2,3 if HDD is still generating the 'melody'
I was able to access and move all data to a safe location. Ironically the drive has served me well for over a month since that remedy. I only use it for very low priority data that I can afford to lose.
Good luck. |

Good luck. | That's an interesting method that I haven't heard of before. I may have to try that next time... |

OK well since then, my other maxtor hard drive ( master ) has stopped working now as well. Disc still spins and it reads on another computer ( linked with USB) as being unpartitioned. Anyone know of any good FREE data recovery programs I could use to get some files back? Im using this trial just now and its reading basically all my files but I would need to pay for it to get them, which is a bit of a bummer. Also with regards to my singing 250GB, you have to pay for postage to get an RMA? Surely maxtor should pay for it as its a manufacturing default. I live in the UK as well which means postage isnt going to be very cheap... |

Hi all!
Just wanted to say Hi, first post, and yes, I have a Musical Maxtor, too!
In the "believe it or not" category, the Maxtor was acting as a temporary solution to our OTHER storage unit failing, the infamous "Toaster", the Netgear SC-101. That thing had died a horrible death (and took the CEO from Dataplow to get it back up and running, I kid you not). Our Design department didn't trust the Toaster any more (and I can't blame them), so they were using a Maxtor One Touch II with 200Gb of storage until I could get them a storage server built.
Needless to say, they aren't happy people right now.
I've got my drive in the freezer right now, hoping for a miracle (though I ALSO have a signed req for $1300 worth of invasive data recovery).
I'll let everyone know if the freezer thing pans out (the thumping and spinning didn't)
Great community, guys! |
