do u think i will be able to retrieve my data? its very important
im willing to pay for a recovery service instead of banging and freezing it. | I had the same thing as you, check out my post here: Musical Maxtor
Handy Recovery worked for me, and I thought it was lost forever! Many other programs failed. |

I froze mine then to unstick it I held it in my hand on the sides then with a quick clockwise/counter clockwise twist (like turning on the water hose) it broke loose as I felt it do. |

I just figured that I would chime in on my experience so far with my DiamondMax 10 300GB PATA drive.
First the details:
DiamondMax 10
Model: 6L300R0
Code: BAJ41G20
K,M,G,A
Basically I came home one day and my file server that this drive was in was off. I powered it back on and saw a spark from the hard drive and everything shut off again (I rarely have covers on my machines -- this is how I saw the spark). After examining the drive I found that one of the IC chips was fried. Recently I acquired a 100% identical drive... ALL numbers on the PCB and the drive were the same so I figured that replacing the PCB would correct this situation because it was a short and nothing physically happening to the drive. After replacing the PCB I know hear the drive play this tune and then the little "grinding" noise after it.... EXACTLY the same way the wav file on this thread sounds.
I'm not sure what to think of the scenario other than possibly the short on the PCB caused damage to the drive in some way shape or form. I just put the drive in my freezer and I'm going to head to bed and try it tomorrow. I just wanted to document my experience for anyone else who is finding this thread looking for solutions like the rest of us. |

| Mine ended burning...
Hi everyone!
This is just to say that the "american method" didn't work for my Musical Maxtor (160 GB)... I tried shaking it a bit (unplugged) and one of the chips began melting and smoking when I plugged it again... I'm afraid that i've lost everything on it...
I've got a pic of it but I don't know how to upload it...
Hope you'll be luckier!

Hi Manu!
I assume the pic that burned on your harddisk is the motordriver (labeled 'Smooth'). the same happened to my maxtor diamondmax 10 250 GB. I bought a replacement PCB from ebay (40$) that fits my harddisk type. It's working now and i'm recovering my data right in that moment.
I found that thread because after replacing the board and starting up my harddrive, it produced exactly this beep music one time. I think the platters got stuck when the motordriver burned and the 'buzz routine' was used to unstuck them.

Wow... this thread still lives!
Thanks to the modern goodness that is YouTube, I must say I've never heard this before. I could guess it is stiction, but I'm not any better than the next guy here. Ya gotta love those high speed servos, they can operate at much higher frequencies than the old ST251s (25 meg) I used to love.

Hey guys,
yesterday i tripped over the usb cable and my HD fell over. I can hear it rolling, but it beeps every 10 seconds or so. It's not the pattern i heard in the MP3, it's just one beep, with vast intervals.
I've got a 500 GB Maxtor Touch 4. http://www.trustedreviews.com/images...447-1T4Big.jpg
Should I open the case? Cause then warranty will be impossible.
It has 450 GB of data on it, cause I just finished copying everything from my pc's to that drive. It would be insanity if all of that was lost.
Eager to hear some help (I've read the entire thread, but don't seem to find anything regarding this model)
Thanks. |

Hi, DhedDr:
If you knocked it over, then the warranty won't cover the problem anyway. But if you just copied everything over, then the files are still on your PC, correct?

Yeah, but it wasn't a back-up, it was just a real seperate disc holding all my files.
I've got copies of some of them, on dvd, but only a scratch of the entire thing.
I don't really care about warranty anyway, don't think I'll ever be buying an other Maxtor. I'd just want to access those files again.

| Opened disk and platters are not spinning - how to unlock ?
Hi,
I have a Maxtox 250Gb disk who suddenly died on me with the "singing harddisk" symptom.
After trying shaking and kicking it, I finally decided to open it and take a look inside. The arm is towards the center of the platters, and I can move it back and forth - it's not stuck to the discs.
When I power the drive on, I see the arm move back to the center position, and hear the noise. The discs are not spinning up at all, not even trembling, so I think the motor is broken. When I tried to gently turn the discs myself, it didn't work. I had to use quiet some force to have the discs turn, and it doesn't go smoothly at all. It is as if the motor melted down or so.
Nice to know: when I power the drive back on, the silly melody starts playing. When I -- during the (it plays it 3 times) "song" -- turn the discs myself, the "song" stops as if the electronics detect that the platters are moving.
Now... who knows how to unlock the motor ?
Can I eventually replace the motor (from an old similar disc ?)
Who has a broken silmilar disc whic I can perhaps use to tear out the motor ?
All help appreciated !
